The technology giant highlighted that their existing policies were effective in regulating the use of AI and that instances of confirmed or suspected misuse remained low. In a blog post, Meta explained, “While there were instances of confirmed or suspected use of AI in this way, the volumes remained low and our existing policies and processes proved sufficient to reduce the risk around generative AI content.” This proactive approach included rejecting numerous requests to create misleading images of notable political figures to thwart the potential proliferation of deepfakes.

Furthermore, Meta found that coordinated disinformation campaigns using generative AI experienced negligible advancements in productivity. Meta’s focus remained on the behaviors of accounts attempting to disseminate misinformation rather than the AI-generated content. This strategy allowed the company to dismantle approximately 20 covert influence operations globally to mitigate foreign meddling in elections.

The company underscored that many disrupted networks lacked genuine audiences and inflated their presence through artificial likes and followers. Additionally, Meta drew attention to other platforms’ roles, particularly naming X and Telegram, as forums where misleading content derived from Russian influence operations frequently appeared.
