In Oshana, 26 drowning cases were reported between January and May 2025, with February and March being particularly deadly. The most recent victim was 29-year-old Mukelebai Herre Nasikambo, who drowned while fishing. Police are urging the public to take precautions in deep water following this tragic trend.
In the Oshana Region, police reported a concerning total of 26 drowning cases between January and May 2025. The majority of these incidents occurred during the months of February and March, indicating a peak period for such tragedies. Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria of the Oshana police noted that 16 of these drowning deaths were recorded just during those two months.
Victims of these drownings spanned a wide age range, from a six-year-old child up to a 65-year-old pensioner, reflecting the indiscriminate nature of these accidents. Tragically, one of the latest drowning victims, a 29-year-old man named Mukelebai Herre Nasikambo from Katima Mulilo, drowned on Saturday while fishing in a man-made dam at Oshakati, creating further alarm in the community.
Nasikambo worked as a domestic worker in Onawa village and was reportedly fishing with his girlfriend at the time of the incident. Deputy Commissioner Sakaria detailed that the victim entered the water in an attempt to retrieve a fish caught in a floating cooldrink container. Eyewitness reports suggest he swam out but called for help as exhaustion set in.
His girlfriend, who was positioned at the water’s edge, sought assistance, but unfortunately, it was too late. The police’s Special Reserve Force later recovered his body when they conducted search operations in the area. This incident underlines the need for heightened awareness and safety measures.
In response to the spate of drownings, Commissioner Sakaria has strongly urged the public to exercise caution around deep water and avoid risky activities that could lead to further tragedies. It is a call for community vigilance, especially during periods when water-related incidents appear most prevalent.
The Oshana Region has seen alarming numbers of drowning incidents in early 2025, particularly in February and March. The latest tragedy, involving 29-year-old Mukelebai Herre Nasikambo, underscores the importance of safety around water bodies. As the local police highlight the urgent need for community awareness, it is essential for individuals to heed warnings and avoid risky behaviors near deep waters to prevent further loss of life.
