Kenya Meteorological Department Issues Weather Warning for Strong Winds and Ocean Waves This Weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of strong winds and ocean waves from May 23 to May 25, affecting several counties. Wind speeds may exceed 35 knots, while waves may rise above two meters, creating potential risks to property and marine activities, especially along the coast. Current heavy rains also contribute to flooding and displacement in several areas.
The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a warning regarding serious weather conditions expected this weekend. Strong winds and elevated ocean waves will impact multiple regions from Friday, May 23, through Sunday, May 25. Residents along the coast and in areas like the south-eastern lowlands, as well as the north-western counties, should prepare for these severe weather patterns.
Specifically, counties expected to experience strong southerly winds include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale. Wind speeds could soar above 30 knots, particularly peaking over 35 knots during the weekend, causing alarm about potential property damage and disruptions to marine activities.
Residents in coastal regions, notably Tana River, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale, are warned of waves exceeding two metres from the Indian Ocean. This situation might significantly impair visibility and hinder fishing and shipping operations. The Kenya Met has cautioned, “Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential gale (very strong winds) and large waves over the Indian Ocean,” underscoring the importance of vigilance during this period.
Furthermore, the department has indicated potential risks for property damage. “Large waves may lower visibility and affect marine activities,” they outlined. The likelihood of these hazardous events is measured at a moderate chance, between 33 and 66 percent.
This weather alert comes amidst ongoing heavy rainfall that has led to flooding in various parts of the country, displacing families and causing widespread concern. Continuous rainfall is anticipated to affect higher highlands, the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, and northwestern Kenya, with nighttime temperatures potentially dipping down to 9°C, adding to the hardships residents face.
In summary, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a strong warning for intensified weather this weekend, warning of winds and waves that could cause significant disruption and damage. With multiple counties at risk, residents are urged to remain attentive and take necessary precautions. This announcement underscores not only the immediate dangers of the current conditions but also the broader implications of extreme weather patterns now affecting various regions throughout the country.
