Dangote Group Partners with Niger State to Enhance Rice Production

The Dangote Group has announced a multi-billion naira partnership with Niger State Government to boost rice production. A new rice mill project in Wushishi, with the capability of processing 32 metric tonnes per hour, is underway as part of the Niger Food Initiative. This collaboration aims to enhance food security, generate jobs, and improve agricultural practices in the area.
The Dangote Group has launched a significant agricultural partnership with the Niger State Government aimed at enhancing rice production and bolstering Nigeria’s food security. This collaboration was detailed by Fatima Abdurrahman, Senior Special Adviser to the President of Dangote Group, during the inauguration of the 2025 Niger National Trade Fair in Minna.
Abdurrahman revealed that they are planning to invest considerably in a new rice mill, capable of processing 32 metric tonnes per hour, based in Wushishi on a substantial 30-hectare site. She assured that construction is “progressing steadily and on track for completion.” This project is part of the Niger Food Initiative, an agricultural development effort initiated by the state government and the private sector.
“As part of our commitment to advancing agriculture, we plan to establish one of the largest rice mills here in Niger State,” stated Abdurrahman. She elaborated that this high-capacity mill is set to significantly enhance rice production, while also improving storage capabilities in the region, referring to it as “a cutting-edge facility that incorporates the latest innovations in rice milling technology.”
Moreover, Abdurrahman emphasized that the state-of-the-art facility is designed for high efficiency, promoting minimal waste and ensuring premium-quality output. “Once operational, it will not only boost local rice production but also strengthen the entire agricultural value chain, from farm to market,” she remarked.
The project will also feature 32 silos, with each having a capacity of 2,500 metric tonnes of paddy rice, in addition to a power generation plant producing 5.8 megawatts of electricity. This initiative is part of broader strategies to lessen dependency on the national power grid.
Furthermore, the Dangote Group has committed to serving as complete off-takers for rice cultivated by local farmers, providing necessary inputs such as fertilizers and seedlings. Abdurrahman stressed that this project would create a multitude of employment opportunities and support agricultural advancement in Nigeria.
Aminu Takuma, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry, spoke on behalf of Governor Muhammed Bago, affirming that Niger State is receptive to significant investments in agriculture. He expressed gratitude to the Dangote Group for their engagement and encouraged them to explore the state’s investment-friendly climate.
Additionally, Takuma mentioned that efforts are underway to elevate the Niger Trade Fair to an international level. Dr. Bisi Adeniyi, President of the Niger Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, urged private stakeholders to invest in the state’s abundant agricultural prospects. Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sabi Abdullahi, represented by Dr. Suleiman Ladan, reiterated that commercial agriculture is pivotal to President Bola Tinubu’s economic growth agenda.
In conclusion, the Dangote Group’s collaboration with the Niger State Government marks a significant step towards enhancing rice production in Nigeria. With a massive investment in a state-of-the-art rice mill, this project promises to greatly bolster local food security and create employment. As stakeholders from both the government and private sector rally behind this initiative, the potential for agricultural growth in Niger State looks promising.
