Authorities in Kenya have made significant progress in the investigation into the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were. A key suspect, identified as Isaac Kuria, who goes by the alias “Kush,” was apprehended near the Kenya-Tanzania border in Isebania. This development comes after Were was shot dead in broad daylight on Nairobi’s Valley Road
.
The arrest of Kuria marks a breakthrough, according to a senior police officer who requested to remain anonymous. “This man was on the run, and his arrest marks a major breakthrough in our investigation. We believe he was the triggerman,” the officer stated. Investigators suggest that Kuria meticulously planned the attack, tracking Were through the bustling streets of Nairobi before ambushing him during a traffic halt.
Following the murder, Kuria allegedly escaped to Mihang’o, where he disposed of the murder weapon, a pistol later recovered by authorities. He then traversed through Narok on a motorbike and boarded public transport to Isebania. Investigators suspect he had been in contact with a relative in Tanzania, coordinating a potential escape.
Detectives used intercepted communications to track Kuria’s movements. “We were monitoring his communications and knew he was trying to leave the country,” a source familiar with the case revealed. At the time of his arrest, he was found along with another person, both of whom have now been taken back to Nairobi.
This latest arrest brings the total number of individuals in custody to eleven concerning the assassination. This includes Were’s personal bodyguard, Allan Omondi, his driver, Walter Owino, and William Imoli, who investigators believe played a significant role in planning and financing the assassination.
In addition, prominent figures such as businessman and politician Phillip Aroko, along with Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng, are also under investigation for alleged financial contributions towards the murder plot. Edwin Oduor and Dennis Manyasi are among those detained as well.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is delving into bank transactions and communications between the suspects to uncover the underlying motives behind Were’s killing. After the murder, the late MP was laid to rest on May 9 at his rural home in Kachien village, located in his home constituency of Kasipul.
The arrest of Isaac Kuria in connection to the assassination of MP Charles Ong’ondo Were signifies a critical step in the ongoing investigation. With the number of individuals detained now at eleven, authorities are scrutinizing potential financial backers and communications-related to the murder plot. The DCI’s continued analysis is pivotal in uncovering the full details and motives behind this high-profile case.
