Cody Timothy Casey emerged before the Vancouver Provincial Court on April 25, following his extradition from Germany. Provincial Court Judge Donna Senniw ordered that he be remanded in custody, signaling the start of the legal process that will likely address his extensive criminal allegations.
Casey had outstanding Canada-wide warrants issued by the Vancouver Police Department for a staggering 17 offences related to drug trafficking and firearm possession. The initial charges against him date back to October 8, 2021, stemming from incidents that occurred on July 27, 2020. Allegations detailed in court documents list various charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and ketamine.
Among the firearm charges, it is reported that Casey possessed semi-automatic and pump-action firearms, specifically a Sturmgewehr STG44 .22 long rifle, an Akkar Churchill shotgun, and a Mossberg Tactical T 22 rifle on the dates in question. At one point, he was released on bail set at $200,000, with conditions that included surrendering his passport and other travel documents. Sadly, he later cut off his electronic ankle monitor in April 2022, just days before he was to stand trial, and subsequently vanished.
His alleged accomplice, Janell Elizabeth Sandhu, is also implicated in the cases concerning the production and trafficking of these substances prior to the escape. In June 2023, the Vancouver Police Department sought public assistance in locating Casey, believing that he might still have acquaintances in Metro Vancouver who knew of his situation.
In a detailed look back, Insp. Phil Heard explained that the investigation into Casey began as early as February 2020, leading to explosive drug busts including a search warrant executed on February 16, 2020, targeting a drug lab in a downtown Vancouver condo. Over four kilograms of fentanyl were seized from that operation alone. Subsequent police raids in late July 2020 netted more than 20 kilograms of fentanyl and nearly 10 kilograms of methamphetamine, in addition to firearms and cash worth over $315,000. The estimated street value of the drugs seized in those operations was nearly $5 million.
The case illustrates the continuing battle against organized crime related to drug trafficking in Canada, particularly within the Metro Vancouver area. With Casey now back in custody, it remains to be seen how proceedings will unfold in the coming weeks and months.
