Nepal Donates 27 Tons of Relief Supplies to Earthquake-Hit Myanmar

Nepal has donated 27 tons of relief materials to earthquake-affected Myanmar, including food, daily essentials, and medical supplies. Officials from both countries engaged in discussions during the handover at Yangon International Airport. On April 10, 2023, the government of Nepal donated 27 tons of relief materials to Myanmar, which has experienced significant devastation due to a recent earthquake. This aid aims to support the Myanmar citizens who are suffering from the aftermath of the natural disaster. The Nepali delegation delivered these materials at the Yangon International Airport, as confirmed by Joint Secretary Tapas Adhikari from Nepal’s Foreign Ministry.

The relief supplies included food items, daily essentials, medicines, and health supplies. Alongside Joint Secretary Adhikari, Nepali Ambassador to Myanmar, Harish Chandra Ghimire, and other Myanmar officials participated in this handover event. They engaged in a brief discussion regarding the ongoing challenges faced by both nations as a result of natural disasters.

During the meeting, Joint Secretary Adhikari expressed condolences to the victims of the quake, acknowledging the loss of lives and extending wishes for a swift recovery to those injured. He recalled that Myanmar had previously assisted Nepal during its devastating earthquake in 2015, emphasizing the importance of collaboration during such crises.

Adhikari remarked, “At such difficult time, Nepal government and private sector joined hands to provide relief materials to the Myanmar people. Such cooperation will help boost two-country intimacy.” Myanmar official Heu Wai Lwin thanked Nepal for its generosity, reporting that over 3,590 people have lost their lives, while 4,800 have sustained injuries in the quake.

Ambassador Ghimire noted that there are approximately 150,000 Nepalis residing in Myanmar, with 18 fatalities and 15 individuals still unaccounted for after the earthquake of magnitude 7.7 on March 28. In response to the crisis, a Nepali organization is currently providing shelter to 250 Nepalis who survived while a medical team from the Nepali Army has administered emergency services to over 1,300 individuals affected by the disaster.

Nepal’s provision of relief materials to Myanmar serves not only as a humanitarian gesture but also as a reinforcement of the bonds between the two nations. The timely assistance underscores the spirit of solidarity in times of crisis, especially given the historical context of mutual support between Nepal and Myanmar.
