Mozambique’s Leadership Engages in Dialogue Amidst Election Crisis

President Chapo is currently engaging with political parties to reform the state, specifically addressing the electoral law and the constitution, a move initially proposed by his predecessor, Filipe Nyusi, to alleviate the post-electoral crisis. Chapo recently indicated that consensus had been achieved regarding the reference terms for these reforms after consultations with four party leaders, not including Mondlane, who was the second most voted candidate historically.

At the Heroes’ Day event, Chapo indicated plans to expand discussions to include civil society members and academics, although he did not specifically mention Mondlane. He stated, “The first phase of the dialogue involves political parties with seats in parliament and will subsequently include members of civil society, civic, religious and professional associations, as well as academia, so that together we can find joint solutions for the Mozambique we want.”

The European Union Observation Mission has emphasized that resolving the post-electoral crisis necessitates Mondlane’s inclusion in the negotiations. Laura Ballarín, the head of the EU mission, asserted, “I believe that there is no political solution to this crisis without a dialogue that is truly inclusive and in which Venâncio Mondlane participates,” during a recent press conference.

Since October 21, Mozambique has been facing significant social unrest fueled by protests led by Mondlane. Tensions have escalated, resulting in violent confrontations with law enforcement, leading to over 315 fatalities, including approximately 20 children, and around 750 individuals suffering injuries due to gunfire according to the non-governmental organization, Decide, which oversees electoral processes in the country.
