Gabon’s Constitutional Court has approved eight presidential candidates, including coup leader Brice Oligui Nguema, who is now eligible to run following constitutional amendments. The election is set for April 12, with notable contenders including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Billie By Nze and Gninga Chaning Zenaba, the only woman candidate.

The Constitutional Court of Gabon has approved eight candidates for the presidential election scheduled for April 12. Among them is Brice Oligui Nguema, the head of the transitional government following a military coup in 2023. Typically, leaders from transitional governments are prohibited from participating in elections; however, a newly ratified constitution allows Nguema to contest, sparking apprehension regarding the junta’s motives.

Nguema, who has brought an end to the long-standing Bongo family’s rule, will face significant competition, notably from former Prime Minister Alain Claude Billie By Nze, widely regarded as his primary rival. Additionally, Gninga Chaning Zenaba, the only female candidate, and Stephane Germain Iloko Boussengui, a former member of Bongo’s Gabonese Democratic Party, are also in the running.

The upcoming Gabonese presidential election has generated considerable interest, particularly with the participation of coup leader Brice Oligui Nguema following constitutional changes. His candidacy raises questions about the future political landscape, especially as he faces formidable opponents, including former Prime Minister Alain Claude Billie By Nze and others. The election on April 12 will be pivotal in determining Gabon’s governance moving forward.
