Cyclone Devastation in Mozambique: Bishop Recounts the Impact on Communities

Cyclone Dineo in Mozambique has devastated the Diocese of Nacala, affecting over 2,155 individuals and destroying numerous homes and infrastructure. Bishop Vera reported extensive damage to chapels, schools, and healthcare facilities, prompting the need for emergency assistance and reconstruction efforts. The impact on education and medical services underscores the severe ramifications of natural disasters in the region.
In Mozambique, Cyclone Dineo has caused widespread destruction, affecting over 2,155 individuals from 380 families, with a reported fatality and 18 injuries. The cyclone’s ferocious winds and heavy rainfall completely obliterated 380 homes and partially damaged an additional 28, leaving numerous families homeless and vulnerable.
The repercussions of the cyclone extend to critical infrastructure, with 24 health facilities sustaining damage that obstructs access to vital medical services. Furthermore, the education sector was adversely impacted, as 27 schools were damaged, disrupting the education of 2,266 students and affecting 158 teachers.
Bishop Vera recounted the experience of “hours of terror along the entire coast” to ACN, highlighting that many chapels, schools, and pastoral centers were stripped of roofs. He noted, “The destruction is very extensive. Around half of the mud houses in the 10 districts of the Diocese of Nacala were damaged.” Moreover, he described the havoc caused by winds gusting between 100 and 150 kilometers per hour, which resulted in the destruction of several bridges, isolating communities.
The Diocese of Nacala frequently endures cyclonic devastation during this season. Earlier this year, Cyclone Dikeledi wreaked havoc, destroying numerous homes and churches and leaving thousands without electricity. In response, Bishop Vera proposed an emergency plan for the diocese, emphasizing the urgent need for materials to rebuild chapels, schools, and other communal structures.
The recent cyclone in Mozambique has had a catastrophic impact, particularly on the Diocese of Nacala, resulting in loss of lives, homes, and critical infrastructure. The severe damage to medical facilities and schools highlights the widespread effects of natural disasters on community stability and social services. The response from the church and local authorities is vital in addressing the immediate needs of the affected population and initiating reconstruction efforts, ensuring that affected families receive urgent assistance and support.
