Authorities report that she had remained on the beach with 22-year-old Joshua Riibe from Iowa, who is majoring in land surveying at St. Cloud State University.
Riibe informed investigators that both he and Konanki entered the water but that he subsequently fell asleep on the beach. Upon waking, he discovered she was missing. Security footage indicates that Riibe returned to his hotel room shortly before 9 a.m. Konanki’s clothing was later found on a portable bed near the location of her disappearance, without any signs of violence.
Dominican officials have expressed their belief that Konanki may have accidentally drowned. The investigation, which is headed by the FBI in collaboration with the Dominican National Police, has clarified that Riibe is considered a person of interest rather than a criminal suspect. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office reiterated that there is currently no criminal investigation related to the case.
