Satellite Analysis of Flood Extents in Botswana as of March 2025

Satellite data from 4 March 2025 reports flood extents in Gaborone, South East, and Kgatleng Districts, Botswana, indicating 7 km² affected by flooding. A reduction of 23 km² in floodwaters occurred since 23 and 25 February 2025. Ground verification is requested from the UNOSAT.
On 4 March 2025, satellite imagery revealed the water extents in Gaborone, South East, and Kgatleng Districts of Botswana, following significant flooding. The map produced from multisatellite data, including Sentinel-2, PlanetScope, and Kanopus-V, indicates a cumulative flood extent of approximately 7 km² within the analyzed area of 700 km². Comparatively, there has been a reduction of floodwaters by about 23 km² since the previous observations on 23 and 25 February 2025.
This analysis serves as an initial report and has not yet undergone field validation. Interested parties are encouraged to provide ground feedback to the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) to enhance data accuracy.
In summary, recent satellite observations document significant flooding in Botswana’s Gaborone and surrounding districts, with a current affected area of 7 km² within a broader scope of 700 km². The analysis indicates a reduction in flood extents since the end of February. Additional validation from ground feedback to the UNOSAT is necessary to confirm these preliminary findings.
