The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rainfall from March 7 to March 11, 2025, affecting the highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley. The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall across several regions from March 7 to March 11, 2025. The advisory includes alerts for isolated storms during the weekend. Areas at risk encompass the highlands to both the west and east of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Central and South Rift Valley.
In addition to the aforementioned locations, the Coastal Region, south eastern lowlands, northwest, and sections of the southern coast are also expected to receive rainfall. The Kenya Meteorological Department indicated that while much of the nation would witness predominantly dry and hot conditions, these would be followed by significant rainfall from the weekend onward.
Counties in the highlands east, such as Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi are projected to experience moderate to heavy precipitation between Saturday and Tuesday, following a sunny Friday. Similarly, regions around Lake Victoria and the Rift Valley, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, and others, will likely see intense rainfall from March 9 to March 12.
Furthermore, counties such as Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, and several others will likely experience heavy rain as well. Conversely, the North Eastern region comprising Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo is expected to remain dry and sunny over the weekend.
The meteorological department has also reported that most regions will experience high temperatures, exceeding 30°C, except for the Highlands east of the Rift Valley. Additionally, some areas in northwestern and northeastern Kenya could encounter strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s).
In summary, the Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast significant rainfall across multiple regions in Kenya from March 7 to March 11, 2025. Areas such as the highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley are particularly affected, with expectations for isolated storms over the weekend. While most regions will be warm and dry initially, a shift to wet weather is imminent, accompanied by high temperatures and strong winds in certain areas.
