Germany Urges Syria to Prevent Further Violence Amid Recent Clashes
Germany’s Foreign Ministry has called for all parties in Syria to avoid further violence following significant recent clashes resulting in over 200 deaths. The call for peace comes after intense fighting mainly involved pro-Assad forces and the new government’s fighters. On March 8, 2025, Germany’s Foreign Ministry urged all parties involved in the conflict in Syria to prevent a “spiral of violence” following a recent surge of violence that resulted in over 200 fatalities in just two days. The fighting was primarily between government forces and fighters loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad, with the latter attacking villages in the coastal region, traditionally known for its support of Assad. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that these assaults were in retaliation for attacks on government security forces.
A statement from the German Foreign Ministry expressed dismay at the casualties reported and called for efforts toward peaceful resolution, national unity, political dialogue, and transitional justice. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock had previously indicated during her visit to Damascus in January that Germany would support Syria provided the government made certain assurances, including the protection of minority groups.
The recent wave of violence was sparked by ambushes on transitional government security forces occurring along Syria’s western coast. Additionally, Anas Khattab, head of Syria’s General Intelligence Service, indicated that investigations suggest involvement from former military leaders associated with the previous regime in orchestrating these violent acts.
Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa called upon pro-Assad militia members from the Alawite minority to disarm, emphasizing the necessity of consolidating state control over weaponry. His statements were broadcasted on Telegram, affirming a commitment to regulate arms and eliminate unrestrained weaponry. Current clashes in western Syria represent the most intense violence experienced since the regime’s fall in December, featuring an insurgent coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The new government aims to heal the country after years of civil conflict that has led to significant loss of life and widespread displacement.
