Benin Women Protest Against Domestic Violence Following Murder of Pregnant Housewife
A group of women in Benin City protested the murder of Success Izekor, who was killed by her husband, Kelvin Izekor. The demonstration aimed to highlight the alarming rate of domestic violence against women. The local police confirmed the incident, and the Commissioner of Police promised a thorough investigation to hold the perpetrator accountable.
On Monday, a group of women known as Concerned Market Women gathered in Benin City to peacefully protest the tragic murder of 38-year-old Success Izekor, who was allegedly killed by her husband, Kelvin Izekor. Success was four months pregnant at the time of her death, which occurred in their home on February 22, 2025, when her husband purportedly stabbed her.
During the protest, participants carried placards expressing their outrage over the rising incidents of domestic violence against women. Odion Asemota, a representative for the group, called upon the government to ensure justice for Success, emphasizing the need for accountability in incidents of domestic violence. Although Kelvin Izekor is currently facing legal proceedings, concerns have been raised regarding statements purportedly made by his mother suggesting he would be released due to claims of mental illness.
Asemota detailed the shocking circumstances surrounding the murder, noting that just eight months after their marriage, Kelvin Izekor fatally attacked Success, then proceeded to steal from her Point of Sale business following the incident. She recounted that he attempted to dispose of her body but was caught by neighboring residents.
The murder was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command through their spokesperson, Moses Yamu. He detailed how police intervened in a situation where an angry mob sought to lynch Kelvin, who was found with Success’s lifeless body that displayed visible signs of violence. The police took action to apprehend the suspect and transport the victim to a hospital, where she was declared dead.
Additionally, Commissioner of Police Betty Enekpen Isokpan Otimenyin condemned the surge in domestic violence and assured the community of a comprehensive investigation into the case. She upheld that any individuals identified as responsible for this crime would face the full extent of the law.
