Anger has erupted in Chagni town following the deadly shooting of two young business owners by security forces during a traffic stop. The regional government has arrested six suspects, including a kebele administrator. Community members are demanding justice for the victims, who were well-respected and lacked political affiliations.

Outrage has risen in Chagni town, situated in the Amhara Region’s Agew Awi Zone, following the fatal shooting of two young men during a traffic stop conducted by government security forces. In response to this incident, the regional government has apprehended six individuals, including a kebele administrator.

The victims, identified as Meseret Haymanot and Minale Wale, were prominent business individuals in the community, recognized for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. They had established a business renting out excavators and loaders. According to a witness, both men were shot while returning home in a rickshaw after a long day.

Bekele Mekuria, the head of peace and security in Chagni, has indicated that while there is no direct indictment of the security forces, the shooting may have resulted from an impulsive and negligent act. He stated, “Security forces from the area, including the kebele administrator, who were on night duty, noticed a rickshaw parking. When it started to move, they ordered the driver to stop. When he failed to comply, they opened fire on him.” The investigation into the incident remains ongoing to uncover the truth behind the tragic events.

Currently, five security personnel, which includes the kebele administrator who was on duty that night, are facing arrest and are under investigation to determine accountable parties while seeking justice for the bereaved families.
