Namibia’s Supreme Court Dismisses Opposition’s Election Challenge

Namibia’s Supreme Court has dismissed an election challenge from opposition parties, allowing the ruling SWAPO party’s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to take office next month. After winning the elections last November, SWAPO’s governance was contested by claims of flawed electoral processes. However, the court ruled the extension of voting was lawful, confirming SWAPO’s victory.

On Friday, Namibia’s Supreme Court dismissed an opposition challenge regarding the presidential election held last year. This ruling paves the way for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling SWAPO party to assume office next month. SWAPO, which has governed Namibia for over thirty years, secured victories in both the presidential and parliamentary elections conducted in November. Opposition parties claimed the election process had significant flaws owing to several issues, including an extended voting period.

Chief Justice Peter Shivute determined that the decision to extend voting days was lawful, thereby dismissing the challenge posed by the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), which had placed second in the elections. The IPC was supported in this legal battle by another opposition group, the Landless People’s Movement. “Their challenge to the outcome for the 2024 presidential election … fails,” asserted Chief Justice Shivute.
