South Sudan: Farmers Grow Rice Amidst Flooding Crisis

Severe flooding in South Sudan has caused widespread devastation, affecting millions and displacing 226,000 individuals. Action Against Hunger has initiated a project to teach farmers rice cultivation in flooded fields, improving food security. Despite the ongoing crisis and access challenges, farmers exhibit resilience in the face of adversity, supported by innovative aid initiatives.
In South Sudan, farmers are battling dangerous flooding to cultivate rice in submerged fields. Recent torrential rains have devastated the region, leaving millions at risk. Previously predictable rainy and dry seasons have been altered dramatically, resulting in extensive displacement and severe hunger, with 226,000 people forced from their homes and eight million facing food insecurity.
Flooding has ravaged infrastructure, inundating neighborhoods, schools, homes, and markets. Around 60 healthcare facilities have been impacted, while significant roadways remain obstructed. As a result, many families are deprived of essential resources such as food, clean water, shelter, and medical care.
Action Against Hunger, operating since 1985 in South Sudan, has focused on aiding communities in regions such as Paguir, Old Fangak, and New Fangak. Prior to the floods, these vulnerable communities were grappling with food shortages and poverty, housing millions of internally displaced persons and a substantial number of refugees fleeing conflict from neighboring Sudan.
Recognizing the persistent threat of flooding, Action Against Hunger initiated a project aimed at teaching farmers to cultivate rice in flooded conditions. This effort has significantly improved nutrition, allowing families to enjoy healthy rice-based meals rather than resorting to eating waterlilies to stave off hunger.
Despite ongoing challenges posed by floodwaters blocking access to aid, the resilience of South Sudan’s farmers shines through. Their unwavering determination fuels daily efforts amidst adversity. A collection of striking photographs illustrates the challenges faced by these rice growers while highlighting their bravery.
The ongoing flooding in South Sudan has had catastrophic effects on the population, displacing thousands and leaving millions in hunger. Action Against Hunger has stepped in to offer innovative solutions, such as rice cultivation training in flood conditions, which has significantly improved food security for affected families. The determination and resilience of the farmers exemplify hope in these challenging times, although the crisis continues.
