Experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department predict that rainfall will commence in the third week of March, lasting for five months and benefiting farmers in their planting preparations. Current weather conditions remain hot and dry, prompting warnings from the department. Some farmers express frustration over the lack of expected rainfall earlier in the season.

In light of the current sunny and dry conditions experienced across Kenya, experts from the Kenya Meteorological Department have announced an expectation of rainfall within the next three weeks. An official stated that precipitation is anticipated to commence in various regions starting from the third week of March, with heavy rains projected to continue for up to five months, concluding in late July of this year.

Farmers are being advised to commence early preparations for the planting season, which includes tilling their land to coincide with the forthcoming rains. The meteorologist noted, “For the first and second weeks of March, those who prefer to practive dry planting can proceed, as we expect the rains to begin in the third week of March.” It is hoped that the rains will initiate in mid-March and persist through April before tapering off in July.

Farmers have expressed their dissatisfaction concerning the delay of the rains, which are typically expected during this period. Some have indicated that they may reconsider their farming activities this season due to the lack of the short intermittent rains which usually arrive at the beginning of the year. One farmer remarked, “Every farmer is now ready for the planting season. However, the weather has been unusually severe for an extended period, and it seems there is a change in the climate this year.”

Concurrently, the Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding the anticipated continuation of hot and dry weather conditions for the upcoming week. In their weather advisory, they cautioned citizens to prepare for extremely high daytime temperatures anticipated to exceed 30°C from February 25 to March 3. The report indicates that regions in Central Kenya, the Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, and the Lake Victoria Basin could see temperatures between 25°C to 30°C during the day, while nighttime temperatures in certain areas may drop below 10°C.

In summary, rainfall in Kenya is expected to begin in mid-March, lasting until late July, which presents an opportunity for farmers to prepare for the planting season. Amidst concerns over delayed rains, the public is cautioned to remain vigilant as current weather conditions are forecasted to remain hot and dry for the coming week. Farmers are encouraged to take proactive steps in their agricultural preparation.
