Jet Stream Variations and Hydroclimate Extremes in Europe: A 600-Year Analysis

The study explores the impact of jet stream variations on Europe’s hydroclimate over the past six centuries, linking poleward shifts to summer droughts and equatorward shifts to flooding. Recent shifts in the jet stream remain within historical patterns, highlighting the complexity of climate change’s influence on hydroclimatic events.

Research indicates that ongoing climate change can modify the Atlantic–European jet stream, consequently influencing hydroclimate extremes across the region. An analysis of jet metrics spanning the years 1421 to 2023 reveals a correspondence between poleward shifts of the jet stream and summer droughts in Central Europe, whereas equatorward shifts coincide with flood events. Notably, alterations observed in the past three decades remain consistent with historical variability.

In summary, this study underscores the significant relationship between jet stream variations and hydroclimate extremes in Europe over the past 600 years. As climate change progresses, continued observation of jet stream patterns is essential to anticipate future weather-related challenges in the region.
