Nigeria Seeks Thorough Investigation into Nigerian Footballer’s Death in Uganda

The Nigerian government is demanding a complete investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a footballer who died in Uganda under unclear circumstances. NIDCOM’s Hon. The Nigerian government has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who tragically died in Uganda. Honorable Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding his death, describing it as disturbing and unclear.
Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that the Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has requested a full autopsy and an extensive inquiry into this unfortunate situation. She stated, “This is pathetic and appears suspicious. We demand a thorough investigation. No cover up at all. This is so sad!”
The Kajjansi Police Division is currently investigating the incident, which occurred on February 24, 2025. Abubakar Lawal, a professional footballer with Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in unclear circumstances shortly after arriving to meet his friend, Omary Naima.
According to Naima, she left Lawal preparing tea in her room before heading to a game center within the mall. Shortly after 8:00 AM, it was reported that Lawal fell from the balcony, and he was pronounced dead at Entebbe Referral Hospital. His belongings, including two smartphones, shoes, a training kit, and chargers, were found in his backpack.
Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage and conducting detailed interrogations to ascertain the exact events leading to Lawal’s death. The Nigerian government remains committed to ensuring a transparent investigation to uncover the truth of this tragic incident.
