Humanitarian Crisis in Mozambique Following Tropical Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi

Tropical Cyclone Chido struck Mozambique on 15 December 2024, causing widespread destruction and affecting over 453,971 individuals. Cyclone Dikeledi followed, compounding the situation, impacting an additional 283,334 people, particularly in Nampula province. Numerous homes, schools, and health facilities have been damaged or destroyed, necessitating an urgent humanitarian response.

Mozambique is currently facing severe challenges following the impact of Tropical Cyclone Chido, which made landfall on 15 December 2024. This cyclone produced torrential rainfall exceeding 250 mm in just 24 hours and winds reaching 120 km/h, leading to extensive destruction before moving into Malawi and ultimately dissipating in Zimbabwe by 17 December. As of 24 December, the National Institute for Natural Disasters (INGD) reported that approximately 453,971 individuals were affected, with 120 fatalities and thousands of injuries recorded.

The devastating effects of Tropical Cyclones Chido and Dikeledi have left communities in Mozambique in urgent need of assistance. The overwhelming destruction highlights the necessity for a coordinated humanitarian response to support affected populations. There is a pressing need to raise awareness and provision of resources to meet the ongoing challenges faced by these communities.
