Morocco is set to establish itself as a leader in electric vehicle (EV) production and green transportation. Its plan involves the complete manufacturing process of electric cars, from raw material extraction to battery production and assembly. Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour highlighted that Morocco aims to be among the few nations globally capable of this comprehensive EV manufacturing.

At a green energy event in Casablanca, Minister Mezzour reiterated that preparations have already commenced, positioning Morocco uniquely in the Euro-African region. This initiative encompasses the mining of essentials such as phosphate and cobalt, development of battery components, and the final assembly of electric vehicles. The Moroccan government anticipates that this development will significantly boost the nation’s exports by 2030.

In addition to vehicle production, Morocco is underway with enhancing its public transport infrastructure by investing in electric buses. Plans have been initiated for the procurement of 7,000 electric buses, with the initial order of 1,300 already placed. Furthermore, officials state that at least half of the remaining buses will also be electric, marking a significant shift towards cleaner transportation.

Morocco is also focused on locally producing high-powered electric buses, which currently range in price from $180,000 to $200,000. The country is leveraging its green transition in anticipation of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, aligning these transportation efforts with its overarching aim of achieving zero carbon emissions in the future, as stated by officials.
