Police in Niger Arrest 2 Suspects for Attempted Kidnapping

In a significant development, the Police Command in Niger announced the arrest of two individuals linked to an attempted kidnapping in Minna. This action was taken following a distress call received late in the evening on June 13, according to a statement from the police’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun.
The suspects, aged 28 and 30, allegedly attempted to kidnap a woman at her residence in the vicinity of Kata, near New-Bwari. As soon as the Tafa Division police operatives were alerted, they acted swiftly and arrived at the scene, apprehending the suspects before they could escape.
Upon their arrest, which occurred around 8 p.m., officers recovered a locally made pistol, two knives, a walkie-talkie, two cartridges, and four mobile phones among other items, including an ATM card, electric tasers, a pepper spray, and various charms. The police reported that the suspects admitted their intentions during questioning, stating they aimed to abduct the woman for ransom.
Additionally, it appears the weapons and tools used by the suspects were purchased from an associate under the pretense of being part of the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF). SP Abiodun confirmed that the situation remains under investigation and the suspects will be referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department to face further inquiries and possible prosecution.
