The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has received praise for successful joint operations with foreign agencies, under the leadership of IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno. Recent initiatives include the rescue of two kidnapped women in Nigeria and the extradition of an armed robbery suspect from Togo. Additionally, a human trafficking ring was dismantled, rescuing 33 victims. These actions reflect a significant shift towards more effective crime prevention and enhanced public confidence in the police.
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) is gaining widespread acclaim for its recent initiatives aimed at curbing crime. Citizens are expressing their admiration following the police’s success in executing joint operations with foreign enforcement agencies that have resulted in multiple arrests. Since COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno took over as Inspector General of Police, there have been significant strides made in crime prevention. Noteworthy events include the recovery of two kidnapped women and the extradition of a robber from Togo.
In one notable operation, the Ghana Police, working in cooperation with Nigerian law enforcement, successfully rescued Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anastasia Baidoo, who were kidnapped in Nigeria. Their captors had demanded a ransom, luring the women through scams. The police revealed that the viral spread of videos depicting their abduction helped catalyze rescue efforts.
Alongside their rescue, eight individuals linked to this kidnapping were apprehended throughout Ghana and Nigeria. This collaborative effort demonstrated significant inter-agency coordination, marking a notable achievement for the GPS.
Additionally, the extradition of Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou from Togo has been another successful operation. This notorious robbery suspect had been wanted for crimes committed mainly in Accra’s affluent areas. At a recent press briefing, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, reported that he was returned to Ghana after a successful collaboration with Togolese authorities.
Moudjibou, identified through CCTV footage during various robberies, was apprehended in January 2025. The exchange was finalized after completing all requisite documentation, ensuring his timely return to face justice.
Moreover, a collaboration involving Interpol and local law enforcement agencies has led to the dismantling of a human trafficking network in Côte d’Ivoire. In this operation, authorities rescued 33 victims from various countries including Ghana, Benin, and Burkina Faso. These individuals had been deceived with promises of secure jobs in Canada, only to find themselves caught in human trafficking.
Reports indicate that the victims had paid as much as $9,000 to these traffickers. The suspects had manipulated these individuals under the pretense of lucrative employment opportunities, often forcing them to maintain an illusion of privilege on social media.
The police are said to have become aware of the trafficking operations following two Ghanaian victims’ experiences. This sparked a series of raids, which ultimately led to the arrests and eventual rescue of victims, reinforcing the commitment of the GPS to combat such crimes effectively.
There are many who believe that these successes signal a new chapter for policing in Ghana, especially under the leadership of Inspector General Tetteh Yohuno. As public trust grows, the Ghana Police Service evidently aims to expand its capabilities further to safeguard the populace.
The recent accomplishments of the Ghana Police Service highlight its dedication to combating crime through international cooperation. The successful rescue of kidnapped individuals, the extradition of a wanted robber, and the dismantling of a human trafficking network have all contributed to a renewed sense of confidence among Ghanaians. The collaborative efforts with foreign law enforcement agencies underscore the importance of teamwork in addressing complex criminal activities. As the GPS continues to develop under new leadership, the public remains hopeful for sustained improvements in safety and security across the nation.
