Omani Soldier Fined Following Online Vigilante Sting During Championships

A soldier from Oman recently faced legal repercussions after being caught in an online sting operation during his participation in the World Pipe Band Championships. Hamdan Alkhamali, age 47, believed he was chatting with a 12-year-old girl on social media, specifically SayHi, from July to August 2024. In reality, he was messaging an adult from a vigilante group who was posing as the minor.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, Alkhamali admitted to sending inappropriate messages and was fined £1,275. Furthermore, he was placed on the sex offenders register after acknowledging the illegality of his communications. The confrontational approach taken by the vigilante group came to a head on August 17, at Glasgow Green, where he was competing with fellow members of the Omani armed forces.
Alkhamali initiated contact with the decoy on July 29 and engaged in discussions that included sexual innuendos. He expressed a desire to meet the girl and specifically requested that their chats remain confidential. His disregard for her age was also evident, although he later claimed to feel apprehensive about the legal implications of his actions.
After his arrest by law enforcement, Alamkhali was allowed to return to Oman temporarily but was subsequently brought back to Scotland to face charges. Notably, an Omani military representative was present in court as the outcome unfolded. The judge, Sheriff Matthew Jackson KC, stated that he had received documentation from both the Ministry of Defence and the Sultan of Oman in relation to this case.
Sheriff Jackson remarked on the unusual nature of the circumstances, underscoring the expectation that Omani authorities would ensure Alkhamali received appropriate counseling. He emphasized, “Do not think that you are getting away with this just because you are a foreign national,” underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the expectation of accountability from Alkhamali’s home country.
