Authorities have arrested a Nigerian woman for trafficking her daughter and other girls to Mauritania for prostitution. The suspects admitted their involvement in the crime and revealed the details of their operation. Investigations are ongoing, and charges will be filed upon completion.

A woman has been apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force’s Zone 2 Command for allegedly trafficking her daughter, alongside other young girls, to Mauritania for commercial sex work. The suspects were arrested at their hideout in the Meiran area of Lagos State on March 22, 2023, with investigations revealing their collaboration with accomplices in Mauritania to lure victims under false pretenses.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer, Umma Ayuba, confirmed that the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad, under the leadership of SP Francis Kpoughul, executed the operation, resulting in the capture of two suspects. During interrogation, one suspect alleged having been introduced to a Mauritanian woman by another who is currently incarcerated for similar offenses.

The first suspect disclosed that she received N50,000 for recruiting each girl and admitted to including her own 19-year-old daughter among the victims. She stated, “The woman in Mauritania contracted her to recruit young girls below the age of 22 to be used as sex workers there.” The suspect confessed to having received over N500,000 from her accomplice in Mauritania.

Meanwhile, the second suspect claimed she was initially contracted to recruit girls as domestic staff. However, upon sending one victim to the first suspect and having the girl rejected due to age and body size, she grew suspicious. After further questioning, she realized the victims were being trafficked for commercial sex work, prompting her to withdraw from the operation.

The case highlights the serious issue of human trafficking in Nigeria, particularly involving minors and young women. The authorities are investigating the suspects further, with charges forthcoming. This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and intervention against such criminal activities that prey on vulnerable individuals.
