In Harare, an armed robber named Bigboy Nampungo, 27, was sentenced to 60 years in prison for participating in a heist that resulted in the theft of US$74,000 from businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s in-laws. However, due to concurrent sentencing, Nampungo will serve an effective term of 30 years. His co-accused individuals remain in custody, denying their involvement in the crime.

Nampungo pleaded guilty to six counts of armed robbery, admitting to a robbery incident that occurred on March 18, 2025, at Alpha and Omega Farm. The victims of this robbery include Zex Mutasha Rusike, Petros Mabhunu, Medic Zhakata, Tinotenda Shonhiwa, Gerald Muteke, and Vimbai Muteke. During the incident, Nampungo and his accomplices were armed with rifles, pistols, machetes, and iron bars.

The court heard that the gang confronted and assaulted the security guard, Mabhunu, demanding information on the whereabouts of other guards. They subsequently tied him up and continued their assault on other guards, including Rusike and Zhakata, during which they stole weapons and cash from them. The robbers managed to enter the main house after cutting the burglar screen and threatened the victims to hand over their valuables.

The heist escalated as the robbers demanded money, firearms, and safe keys from their victims. They acquired substantial amounts of cash including US$18,000 and US$55,000 from the safe, as well as other valuables before escaping the scene. The assault ended when Elphas Maruta approached the house and exchanged gunfire with the gang before they fled with the stolen items.

The total value of the stolen assets is reported to be US$74,000, illustrating the severity of the crimes committed by Nampungo and his accomplices during this robbery incident.

The case underscores the gravity of armed robbery and the judicial system’s response to such crimes. Bigboy Nampungo’s effective 30-year sentence serves as a deterrent while highlighting the collaborative efforts of law enforcement in addressing serious offenses within the community. The ongoing cases against his co-accused further reflect the legal consequences associated with armed robbery in Zimbabwe.
