Ethiopia Introduces 100 Electric Buses in Addis Ababa to Enhance Mobility
Ethiopia has launched 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa to promote electric mobility. The buses, assembled locally with imported components, feature advanced transportation technologies. They aim to enhance public transport efficiency, reduce emissions, and alleviate transportation shortages. The government plans to significantly increase electric vehicle adoption while also banning gasoline and diesel imports to support this transition.
The Addis Ababa City Administration recently introduced 100 electric buses, marking significant progress in promoting electric mobility within Ethiopia. Manufactured locally by the Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex, the buses feature technology components imported from China. These electric buses are now operational on the new Bus Rapid Transit routes, offering a convenient commuting solution for city residents.
Designed to improve the public transport network, the buses are environmentally friendly, with zero emissions, providing a comfortable ride with ample capacity. Ethiopian Minister of Transport and Logistics, Alemu Sime, emphasized that the electric buses will utilize dedicated bus lanes for expedited travel, better addressing the public transport shortage while ensuring a sustainable commuting option for residents.
Furthermore, the Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics revealed that over 100,000 electric vehicles are currently in operation nationwide, with aspirations to expand this to 500,000 within the next decade. This initiative aims to transition 95% of fuel-powered vehicles to electric alternatives in the near future. To support the shift towards electric mobility, the government enforced a ban on the importation of gasoline and diesel vehicles last year due to rising global fuel prices.
