100 Electric Buses Launched in Addis Ababa to Boost Public Transport

Addis Ababa has introduced 100 electric buses to enhance its public transport system. Assembled locally with Chinese components, these buses are eco-friendly and equipped with advanced technologies. The Ethiopian government aims to increase the number of electric vehicles drastically by banning traditional fuel vehicle imports.

The Addis Ababa City Administration has launched a fleet of 100 electric buses as part of its initiative to promote electric mobility in Ethiopia. Assembled by Belayneh Kindie Metal Engineering Complex with components sourced from China, these buses feature advanced technologies, including an Intelligent Transportation System and a Fare Collection System.

These electric buses are now operational along the new Bus Rapid Transit route, providing an efficient commuting option for residents. The buses not only enhance the public transport network but are also environmentally friendly, producing zero emissions while offering comfort and sufficient capacity. Minister of Transport and Logistics Alemu Sime emphasized the buses’ dedicated lanes for expedited travel.

This development is anticipated to tackle the current public transportation shortage in Addis Ababa and to facilitate a shift towards more comfortable, efficient, and sustainable travel. The Ethiopian Ministry of Transport and Logistics reports that over 100,000 electric vehicles are already on Ethiopian roads, with plans to increase this number to 500,000 within ten years, aiming to replace 95% of traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The government has further stimulated this transition by banning the import of gasoline and diesel vehicles in response to rising global fuel prices.

The introduction of 100 electric buses in Addis Ababa marks a significant step towards enhancing public transport and promoting environmental sustainability in Ethiopia. With plans to increase the number of electric vehicles substantially in the years to come, the government is committed to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing electric mobility.
