Police Officer Convicted and Jailed for Soliciting Bribe in Zimbabwe

Constable Peter Loverage Mombe of the Zimbabwe Republic Police was convicted of requesting an US$800 bribe from a truck owner for releasing a seized vehicle. Sentenced to 10 months in prison, he was apprehended during a sting operation after the victim reported his demands to authorities.
In a recent case of public corruption, Constable Peter Loverage Mombe, a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), was convicted for soliciting a bribe of US$800. He appeared in the Harare Magistrates Court, where he faced charges related to abusing his duty as a public officer. Following a full trial, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
The incident occurred on August 2, 2023, at the Engen Service Station in Harare, where Officer Mombe asked truck owner Francis Nembire for a bribe concerning the seizure of Nembire’s vehicle. The vehicle had been confiscated for allegedly transporting lithium ore without the necessary removal permit. Nembire initially agreed to facilitate payment for Mombe’s demands.
After several persistent phone calls from Mombe demanding the bribe, Nembire reported the situation to the ZRP Internal Investigations Unit. This led to the execution of a sting operation using marked money. During the operation, Nembire met Mombe at the service station, and as the transaction unfolded, detectives moved in to make an arrest. Mombe attempted to evade capture by discarding the cash but was apprehended immediately.
The conviction of Constable Peter Loverage Mombe highlights the ongoing efforts to combat corruption within the Zimbabwe Republic Police. His sentencing serves as a reminder of the legal repercussions associated with public officers abusing their power for personal gain. The prompt action taken by the complainant and the ZRP’s Internal Investigations Unit demonstrates a commitment to uphold the integrity of law enforcement, promoting accountability among public servants.
