Khartoum’s Control Shift Marks a New Phase in Sudan’s Civil War
Khartoum has recently changed hands as the Sudanese Armed Forces reclaimed control from the Rapid Support Forces, indicating a new phase in Sudan’s civil war. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s return to the capital marks a significant shift in military dominance and could lead the national army to push into Darfur.
The recent shift in control of Khartoum signals a significant change in Sudan’s civil war. On March 15, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo urged his Rapid Support Forces (RSF) not to retreat; however, shortly thereafter, the RSF surrendered the presidential palace to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). By March 26, both the central bank and international airport were firmly under SAF control, marking a pivotal moment in the conflict.
The capture of vital locations in Khartoum by the Sudanese Armed Forces indicates a decisive turn in the ongoing civil war. With General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan reclaiming the capital for the first time in two years, the dynamics of power are shifting as the national army positions itself to potentially extend its influence further into Darfur.
