Kenyan TikToker Rish Kamunge Charged Over Fake Job Scheme in Mauritius

Kenyan TikToker Rish Kamunge was arraigned for running a fake job scheme targeting job seekers in Mauritius. After being released on Ksh5 million bond, she faces allegations of defrauding victims who paid for non-existent employment. The DCI has urged other affected individuals to report their cases.
Wangare Kamunge, popularly known as Rish Kamunge, a Kenyan TikToker, has been released on a personal bond of Ksh5 million following her arraignment in court for allegedly operating a fraudulent job scheme targeting Kenyans aspiring to work in Mauritius. The court granted her bond despite the prosecution’s appeal for a seven-day detention period.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that Rish, who manages Trustpine Travel Agency, collected amounts between Sh200,000 and Sh400,000 from individuals in pursuit of non-existent employment opportunities in Mauritius. Many victims reported these payments, which ultimately led them to realize the promised jobs were illusions, as noted by the DCI.
Investigations revealed that certain victims traveled to Mauritius, arriving only to be abandoned at the airport without assistance, resulting in their deportation back to Kenya. Rish reportedly admitted to acquiring a total of Ksh12.9 million from 43 victims. Following her court appearance where custodial orders were discussed, she was remanded at Capital Hill Police Station.
Detectives have encouraged other potential victims to come forward and report their experiences at Central Police Station located in Nairobi. Following the scandal, on March 27, a large gathering of Kenyans stormed Rish’s agency offices in Nairobi, demanding refunds after paying substantial amounts for jobs abroad that never materialized.
Complaints indicated that these individuals discovered the agency through online advertisements. One victim shared her ordeal, stating that she initially paid Ksh80,000 as a down payment, followed by Ksh145,000 for flight tickets, totaling Ksh225,000 without receiving any job placement.
In summary, Rish Kamunge has been implicated in a fraudulent job scheme targeting Kenyans seeking employment in Mauritius, leading to significant financial losses for many. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has urged additional victims to report their experiences while Rish has been released on bond after an initial court appearance. The public outcry highlights the vulnerabilities associated with online job advertisements and the need for stringent measures against such scams.
