Three suspects from Zimbabwe and Mozambique were arrested for illegal mining during Operation Vala Umgodi at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp. The operation, which involved the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team and the Explosive Unit, led to the discovery of multiple explosives and mining equipment. The suspects are facing several charges and are set to appear in court.

On March 27, 2025, authorities arrested three individuals from Zimbabwe and Mozambique, aged between 32 and 35, during Operation Vala Umgodi at Shivan Mine Dam in Klerksdorp for engaging in illegal mining. This operation was executed by the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Illegal Mining Task Team with assistance from the Explosive Unit, as part of broader efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the region.

Colonel Adele Myburgh, the North West police spokesperson, reported that the police acted on a tip-off and observed numerous individuals participating in illegal mining when they arrived. Upon noticing the police, many fled the scene, but three suspects were apprehended—two citizens from Zimbabwe and one from Mozambique. During the operation, police discovered several explosives, including 20 capped fuses, 20 blasting cartridges, and 120 meters of detonating cord.

In addition to the explosives, police confiscated 13 generators, two water pumps, and five mining drills from the premises. The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on March 27, 2025, facing charges related to unlawful possession of explosives, illegal mining, and violations under the Immigration Act of 2002.

Major General Patrick Asaneng, the acting North West Police Commissioner, commended the officers involved in the operation for their dedication and effectiveness in apprehending the suspects. Asaneng also urged the public to report crime, emphasizing the importance of community involvement, and provided information for anonymous reporting through the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the MySAPS application. Additionally, he shared that extortion-related incidents could be reported via the Extortion hotline at 080 091 1011.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address illegal mining activities and uphold the law regarding explosives and immigration. The swift response following a tip-off led to multiple arrests and confiscation of illegal mining equipment. Citizens are encouraged to actively participate in crime prevention by reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
