Kiira Motors Corporation, established in 2014 in Uganda, is pioneering the country’s automotive sector with its electric bus, the Kayoola. This bus is operational in Uganda and has been ordered by several African countries. The company aims to enhance its manufacturing capacity while currently depending on imported components for vehicle production.

In 2007, a group of students and lecturers from a Ugandan university embarked on a mission to create the nation’s first automobile. With support from the government, they founded Kiira Motors Corporation in 2014, marking a significant milestone in Uganda’s automotive sector.

Over the past decade, Kiira Motors Corporation has made substantial advancements in the automotive industry, producing a range of vehicles, including its flagship electric bus, the Kayoola. This innovative bus is operational within Uganda and has received orders from countries such as Tanzania, eSwatini, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Despite its progress, Kiira Motors Corporation aims to increase its manufacturing capacity to produce all vehicle parts domestically. Currently, the company still relies on imports for many components, highlighting the challenges faced in achieving complete self-sufficiency in vehicle production.

Kiira Motors Corporation, founded by students and lecturers, has significantly contributed to Uganda’s automotive landscape with the Kayoola electric bus. The bus’s success has attracted orders from multiple African nations. Nevertheless, the company continues to navigate the complexities of local manufacturing by importing several parts as it strives for enhanced self-reliance in vehicle production.
