A Kenyan police officer is missing after a gang ambush in Haiti. The incident occurred when a rescue operation was launched to assist an immobilized HNP vehicle, leading to an ambush by gang members. Search teams have been deployed to locate the officer, amidst growing security concerns in the region.
A Kenyan police officer is currently unaccounted for following a gang ambush while on a mission in Haiti. The incident was confirmed by the Multinational Security Support (MSS) spokesperson Jack Ombaka, occurring in the Artibonite Department where a rescue operation was launched after a police vehicle became immobilized.
On Tuesday at approximately 4:30 p.m., a Haitian National Police (HNP) armored vehicle was reportedly stuck in a ditch, allegedly created by gangs. In response, the MSS dispatched two Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles for assistance, but one MRAP also became stuck, while the other faced mechanical issues.
The situation escalated when the rescue teams were ambushed by gang members who had been lying in wait. Following the ensuing firefight, it was discovered that one officer from the Kenyan contingent was missing. Specialized teams are now engaged in search efforts to locate him.
Authorities believe several gang members sustained injuries, and there are reports of fatalities, although specific details remain undisclosed. This incident reflects the increasing security challenges confronting the MSS mission in Haiti, as demonstrated by prior assaults including the critical injury of a senior officer on March 18 and the fatal shooting of Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai in February.
The situation concerning the missing Kenyan officer highlights the escalating dangers faced by security personnel in Haiti. This incident, along with previous assaults, underscores the insecurity lacing the mission’s operations. Ongoing efforts to recover the officer and secure the area are crucial in addressing these risks.
