Robbery Suspect Re-Arrested Following Court Escape with Officer’s Aid

Luke Zinyengere, an armed robbery suspect, was re-arrested after escaping custody with the help of prison officer Donald Madzinga, who allegedly supplied him with a firearm. Zinyengere faces new charges including illegal firearm possession and carjacking, alongside ongoing armed robbery trials.
On Monday, law enforcement authorities in Harare apprehended Luke Zinyengere, a 29-year-old armed robbery suspect, following his dramatic escape from court. The incident took place last Friday, when Zinyengere allegedly received a firearm from a prison officer, which he used to shoot at officers during his escape.
Zinyengere now faces multiple charges including robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, unlawful escape from custody, and carjacking, as he drove away in a Mazda Demio outside the Harare Magistrates Court. His re-arrest coincided with the arraignment of prison officer Donald Madzinga, 39, who is accused of aiding the escape of Zinyengere and another inmate, Richard Marondera, who was quickly recaptured.
Both Zinyengere and Marondera are currently on trial for two armed robbery offenses, including a significant heist at Quest Financial Services in February last year, where they stole US$720,000. The court proceedings revealed that Madzinga received a revolver from a relative of Zinyengere to facilitate their escape.
Prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti reported that Madzinga, in breach of his responsibilities, conspired with the inmates, accepting US$700 for his role in the escape plan. Additionally, it was disclosed that a relative delivered the firearm, which was stored in their prison cell, and that Madzinga facilitated communication regarding the escape plan.
On March 21, 2025, when the inmates were due to appear in court, they concealed the firearm in their pants and carried out their plan. As they attempted to escape while being escorted to a prison vehicle, Zinyengere discharged the firearm, causing chaos among the prison staff before hijacking a vehicle. Madzinga is scheduled to attend a bail hearing on Tuesday before magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa.
Luke Zinyengere’s re-arrest highlights a serious breach of security involving prison officer Donald Madzinga, who is implicated in aiding the escape through facilitation of a firearm. This incident raises significant concerns regarding prison management and safety protocols. Both Zinyengere and his accomplice face trial for serious armed robbery charges, indicating the severity of their crimes.
