In contrast, Mondlane has garnered significant backing from younger voters and instead of participating in these talks, he led a march in Maputo, which resulted in violent confrontations with police, injuring 14 individuals. Moreover, police fire during subsequent protests led by Mondlane last week resulted in two fatalities.

The presidency described the meeting as a symbol of hope for constructive dialogue and collaboration, sharing an image depicting the two leaders shaking hands. This outreach occurs against a backdrop of legal struggles for Mondlane, who recently disclosed that he had been questioned by prosecutors for an extended period and is currently under judicial supervision.

Although the official election results indicated that Chapo received 65% of the vote and Mondlane 24%, the latter rejected these figures, asserting he had secured 53%. Following this, Mondlane has emerged as a significant challenger to the Frelimo party, which has been a dominant political force for nearly five decades.
