On March 10, 2023, three internal combustion locomotives produced by CRRC Ziyang Co. were officially shipped to Mozambique, marking the first instance of Chinese internal combustion locomotives being supplied to the country’s railway network. These locomotives are specifically engineered to meet the unique operational requirements prevalent in Africa and signify a significant step for CRRC Ziyang in re-establishing its presence in the African market.
The SDD1 diesel locomotives, developed autonomously by CRRC Ziyang, are tailored for use in Africa and incorporated innovative design elements such as lightweight optimization, an efficient cooling system, and an advanced modular air intake unit. Furthermore, they are equipped with an intelligent control system that enables real-time monitoring, enhancing operational reliability and safety in various conditions.
These SDD1 units are set to facilitate passenger and freight shunting operations in Mozambique, thus playing a vital role in enhancing local railway transportation capabilities. Over the past 24 years, CRRC Ziyang has established a solid footprint in Africa, with a record of delivering more than 230 locomotives to nearly 20 countries, including Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Notably, CRRC Ziyang stands as a leading force in China’s diesel locomotive exports, having supplied over 1,200 locomotives across 34 nations, amounting to more than 50% of the country’s total diesel locomotive exports.
