The arrests took place at approximately 3:00 AM during a routine patrol on the Githunguri-Kiambu Road.
Officers from the Githunguri Police Station intercepted a suspicious Toyota Passo linked to Uber services at Gathanji shopping centre, approximately seven kilometers from their station. The vehicle was being driven by a 34-year-old man named Antony Kimemia Wanyeki, who had picked up the suspects based on a ride request from Kiambu Posta to the Jamaica area nearby.
Upon searching the vehicle and the individuals inside, police discovered tools that are commonly associated with vehicle vandalism and potential assault. Among the items was an improvised strangling device, a sisal rope, various tools including pliers and screwdrivers, a knit cap for disguise, and two sacks intended for transporting stolen car parts.
Additionally, one suspect was found with two national ID cards, one being his and the other belonging to an individual named Mr. Wayayi, along with a smartphone used to book the Uber ride. The police suspect these individuals posed as legitimate customers before violently attacking Uber drivers, particularly on isolated feeder roads in the Kiambu region.
Authorities stated, “The suspects are part of a gang that has been luring unsuspecting Uber drivers before launching attacks and damaging their vehicles.” Investigations are currently ongoing, and the two suspects are in custody, with intentions to present them for identification by recent victimized Uber drivers as part of the ongoing inquiry.
