Exploring LSS Retort Pouch Main Meals from Jordan

At the IDEX expo in Abu Dhabi, several main meal retort pouches from LSS of Jordan were acquired. The meals, which are Halal-certified, offer a variety of Middle Eastern and international cuisine options. Among the tasted dishes were Mandi Rice with Chicken and Kufta Meat with Tahini, both demonstrating rich flavors and fulfilling nutritional content. Future articles will explore more new meal pouches from other sources.
Last month, I visited the IDEX expo in Abu Dhabi and procured several retort pouches from Loyalty Support Services (LSS) of Jordan, specifically their main meal options. Previously, I had mentioned the LSS military ration packs, but had been unable to acquire samples at prior expos. This time, I was presented with a tray meal and three retort pouches, from which I selected LSS Kufta Meat with Tahini, a dish I had enjoyed before in its self-heating form.
The LSS pouch meals reflect a variety of Middle Eastern and international cuisines and are Halal-certified, making them suitable for inclusion in humanitarian rations for Muslim populations. Personally, I am fond of Middle Eastern cuisine and sought out an Iranian restaurant during my stay, as my favorite in London unfortunately did not survive the pandemic. Returning to LSS, they offer several flavors of their packaged meals, each weighing approximately 250 grams, and containing between 320 to 450 kcal, depending on the type, with additional caloric content from accompaniments typically served.
Among the pouches I received were Mandi Rice with Chicken, Freekeh with Chicken, and Kabseh Rice with Chicken. Other available options include Machbous and Madhbi Rice with Chicken, as well as lamb, veal, fish, and vegetarian dishes that feature pasta or beans. For tasting, I prepared the Mandi Rice with Chicken by simmering the pouch for eight minutes before serving it in a Wildo CAMP-A-BOX bowl. The dish imitated traditional Yemeni cooking methods, which involve slow-cooking the meat in spices and cooking the rice with the meat’s stock for rich flavors.
The Kufta Meat with Tahini, another dish I sampled, was presented in a metal tray meal. I prepared this by boiling it, although it could also be warmed using a mess tin or fuel tablet cooker. The meal was also quite flavorful, featuring veil Kufta and accompanied by boiled potatoes. Though this dish weighed less at 200 grams, it was fulfilling, providing 590 kcal as noted on the packaging.
Currently, I have no immediate plans to return to the Middle East until the end of the year. However, I have set aside the Freekeh and Kabseh pouches for a future treat. I am also preparing to cover new German and Estonian freeze-dried meal pouches as well as Norwegian Arctic and American MRE ration packs in my upcoming features.
In conclusion, the LSS retort pouch meals represent a promising alternative to traditional military rations, featuring authentic Middle Eastern flavors and ensuring Halal compliance. Their range of options caters to various preferences and dietary needs. The quality of preparation and the ability to savor these dishes make them an appealing choice for those interested in versatile meal solutions. My experiences with the Mandi Rice and Kufta dishes highlight their potential for both humanitarian use and personal enjoyment.
