Residents of an informal settlement in Havana voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the government’s relocation of the Independence Day celebrations and the inauguration of Namibia’s fifth president from a public venue to State House. The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology announced this change citing anticipated heavy rains in central Namibia as the primary reason for the decision.
The ministry emphasized that space constraints and a high number of international guests would prevent public attendance at the 35th Independence Day celebrations and the inauguration of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Community member Karin Matheus expressed her disappointment, stating, “We wanted to see our president inaugurated.” Another resident, Elise Paulus, voiced her frustration, saying, “We are unhappy. We voted for her, we wanted to see her inaugurated.”
As the event unfolded, tensions escalated at State House, resulting in a scuffle as some individuals were denied entry due to the established space limitations.
