The New Kartarpura Food Street in Rawalpindi, launched in celebration of International Day of Happiness, features 30 eateries that provide a spacious, family-oriented alternative to the overcrowded Kartarpura Street. The venue offers diverse local cuisine, including nihari and lassi, and aims to foster community spirit by supporting small businesses. Positive responses from visitors indicate a successful initiative to enhance dining experiences in the area.

In Rawalpindi, celebrations for International Day of Happiness were enhanced by the opening of the New Kartarpura Food Street at Chandni Chowk. This new venue features approximately 30 food stalls, offering a spacious and family-friendly environment compared to the overcrowded Kartarpura Street, which has historically served as the city’s main commercial area and food hub.

Historically, Kartarpura Street has been famed for local specialties such as nihari and siri paye. Additionally, lassi, an essential yogurt-based beverage particularly popular during Ramadan, continues to be a favorite among locals, with many vendors from Lahore and Gujranwala. However, congestion in the area has deterred customers and vendors alike, prompting a shift to the New Kartarpura Food Street.

This new food street, established under the Chandni Chowk flyover and operational through Ramadan and beyond, has garnered positive responses. Abdul Latif Rashid from Kala Khan Nihari House noted the venue’s success, stating it has facilitated a welcoming atmosphere for families. Organizer Raja Usama explained that the concept was inspired by festive food markets in Dubai, aiming to support small businesses and provide a community-oriented environment.

Among the vendors, Muhammad Hamza from Lahore 0 Kilometer emphasized the popularity of their lassi in seven flavors, attracting customers from both Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Customers, including Mahnoor Kareem, expressed appreciation for the new food street’s relief from the overcrowded conditions of the old Kartarpura, with families choosing this venue for their dining needs.

Kanwal Zahra, a vendor specializing in traditional Pakistani cuisine, highlighted her offerings such as roti, special sugar tea, and palak paneer. In contrast, Meena Nabeel, who sells dumplings, reported that initial skepticism about her momos turned to enthusiasm from customers after tasting them, showcasing the variety of culinary options available at the new market.

The New Kartarpura Food Street signifies a pivotal shift in Rawalpindi’s culinary landscape, addressing issues related to overcrowding and congestion at the historic Kartarpura Street. With its focus on creating a family-friendly environment and promoting local businesses, the food street not only enhances dining options but also fosters community engagement.
