On March 19, 2025, armed National Security personnel, led by Richard Jakpa, raided former Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s home in Accra. Despite searching for alleged “vaults” and confiscating property, no significant findings were made. The raid has caused trauma to the Addison family and raises concerns about the treatment of former officials in Ghana.

On March 19, 2025, National Security personnel, approximately 20 in number and led by Richard Jakpa, conducted a raid on the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The operation, occurring in the morning at Dr. Addison’s home located in Roman Ridge, Accra, involved heavily armed individuals, some of whom were donned in balaclavas and wielded AK-47 rifles.

Upon arrival, the security team immediately disabled the property’s CCTV system and demanded that Dr. Addison guide them to supposed “vaults” in his house. Dr. Addison informed them that he did not possess any vaults or significant sums of money at his residence. Despite his clarifications, the security personnel allegedly proceeded to ransack the home.

No vaults or large amounts of cash were discovered during the search, prompting the team to confiscate the CCTV monitor and control unit from the premises. The entire Addison family is reportedly traumatized following this distressing incident. A close associate of the family conveyed their emotional state to Asaase News.

A retired senior official from the central bank remarked that this incident marks a troubling first for Ghana, as such actions had never been directed towards a Bank of Ghana governor before. They referred to the situation as both “scary and messy.” This incident follows a prior raid on February 10, 2025, when over 15 armed men, also led by Mr. Jakpa, invaded the residence of Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s finance minister. The earlier raid was recorded on CCTV and subsequently shared with the public.

The raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s home by National Security officials represents a significant and unsettling development in Ghana’s political landscape. The lack of findings during the raid and the psychological impact on the Addison family highlight the growing trend of aggressive security measures against former officials. This incident raises concerns about the implications for governance and personal security in the country.
