The Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, has called upon Kenyans to prioritize their safety during the exciting 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally. The event is set to commence in Nairobi and feature high-speed action in Naivasha from Thursday through Sunday. Mvurya emphasized the importance of caution, stating, “Remember to be cautious because the rally cars are quite fast, thrilling, and spectacular. We all want to return home in one piece.”

This year, event organizers have implemented improved safety measures, allowing for an increased attendance at the rally since its return to the WRC calendar in 2021. The official flag-off will be conducted by President William Ruto at City Hall Way in Nairobi before the events transfer to Naivasha.

Furthermore, Mvurya reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting female drivers in motorsport, highlighting the participation of an all-female crew, including Pauline Shegu and Linet Ayuko, and Tinashe Gatimu, who will be accompanied by her mother. He stated, “They are role models inspiring young Kenyan women to embrace motorsport. The government is committed to nurturing talent in the sport.”

The 2025 edition of the Safari Rally could be the most difficult yet, according to Charles Gacheru, CEO of WRC Safari Rally Kenya. He remarked on the brutal nature of the shakedown session, noting, “The competition was tough. This is going to be the most challenging rally ever seen in Kenya, judging by today’s experience. The fesh fesh-filled 32km Camp Moran loop will separate the men from the boys.” During the shakedown, Kalle Rovanperä recorded the fastest time, followed by world champion Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak, indicating a fiercely competitive weekend ahead in Naivasha.

The 2025 WRC Safari Rally emphasizes safety, participation of female motor sport athletes, and presents a potentially challenging experience for competitors. Enhanced safety protocols and increased attendance reflect a positive evolution in the event since its return. As the rally unfolds, it promises to offer thrilling action while promoting a spirit of safety and inclusion in the sport.
