The United Arab Emirates successfully mediated a prisoners-of-war exchange between Ukraine and Russia, which occurred on Wednesday. This exchange resulted in the return of 175 captives from each side, totaling 350 prisoners. According to reports from the Emirates News Agency, this event increases the total number of individuals returned via Emirati mediation to 3,233.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on X that an additional 22 “defenders” are being returned to Ukraine through means other than exchanges. He extended his gratitude towards the UAE for its mediation efforts. The Russian Defense Ministry revealed that those 22 prisoners released were severely injured.
This prisoner exchange unfolded shortly after discussions between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict. Following their conversation, Putin agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, but did not accept the proposed 30-day ceasefire advanced by the United States and Ukraine.

Sheikh Mohamed’s recent visit to Russia and the 2018 establishment of a strategic partnership reflect the growing economic relationship, with non-oil trade between the two surpassing $11 billion in 2023. Future mediation efforts may occur as Saudi Arabia prepares for continued discussions regarding ceasefire implementations.
In a statement post-discussion with Trump, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukrainian and American teams are poised to meet soon in Saudi Arabia to advance peace efforts. Concurrently, statements from US officials highlight plans for technical teams to converge again in Saudi Arabia to facilitate further dialogue on the ceasefire. Other nations, such as Qatar, have also engaged in mediating exchanges between the two nations in recent months, exemplifying a growing diplomatic framework in the region.
