A Kenyan police officer was shot and critically injured in Haiti on March 18, 2025, during a security operation amid rising gang violence. He is currently in stable condition after being evacuated to the hospital. This incident follows the death of another Kenyan officer less than a month prior, underscoring the dangers faced by international peacekeeping forces in the region.

A Kenyan police officer was shot and critically wounded during a security operation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on March 18, 2025. This incident occurred while the officer was conducting a mission in Kenscoff, located in the Belot area, where criminal gangs are prevalent.

According to Jack Ombaka, the mission spokesperson, the injured officer was quickly transported to ASPEN Level 2 Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical care and is reported to be in stable condition. Ombaka added, “We are pursuing the gang behind the shooting,” although he refrained from disclosing the name of the individual involved.

This incident marks the second occasion a Kenyan police officer has sustained gunshot injuries during the ongoing mission in Haiti. Just weeks prior, on February 23, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was fatally shot by gangs in the Segur-Savien region, marking the first Kenyan casualty in this mission that commenced in June 2024. An autopsy revealed he died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Kenya has deployed approximately 800 police officers as part of a United Nations-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti to assist in combating gang violence. Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador have also contributed troops to aid Haiti’s national police in this endeavor.

In a show of support, Inspector General of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, led a delegation of senior officers to visit the family of Constable Kaetuai in Naserian Village, Kajiado East Sub-County, Kajiado County, to express condolences during their time of mourning.

The recent shooting of a Kenyan police officer in Haiti highlights the dangerous conditions faced by law enforcement personnel in the region. This incident follows the tragic death of another officer, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai, reinforcing the ongoing challenges in combating gang violence. Kenya’s commitment to the Multinational Security Support mission, alongside contributions from other nations, aims to restore stability in Haiti.
