Forecast of Severe Weather Raises Attention to Agriculture Support in Morocco
Morocco’s weather office has issued an alert for heavy rainfall and snowfall across several provinces from Monday to Wednesday, with temperatures expected to drop significantly. This weather is anticipated to benefit the agricultural sector, which has been adversely affected by previous months of drought, coinciding with the launch of a new farming season aimed at supporting farmers.
The General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange level alert for Morocco, forecasting strong rainfall and snowfall across various provinces. From Monday to Wednesday, it is expected that rainfall totaling between 35 and 50 millimeters will occur in Taourirt, Figuig, Guercif, Boulemane, Errachidia, Tinghir, and Midelt, starting at midnight on Monday until Tuesday morning.
Further rainfall, ranging from 25 to 30 millimeters, will impact Ouarzazate, Al Haouz, Sefrou, Taza, Beni Mellal, Azilal, M’diq-Fnideq, and Fahs-Anjra between Monday morning and evening. Snowfall is also anticipated in Boulemane, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Tinghir, and Midelt during the same period.
Significantly cold weather is on the horizon, with temperatures predicted to fall between -3 and 3 degrees Celsius across Azilal, Beni Mellal, Al Haouz, Midelt, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Boulemane, and Ifrane. This forecast follows a weekend of rainfall in several cities, including Rabat, indicating a shift in weather patterns.
The anticipated rain is favorable for Morocco’s agriculture sector, which has struggled with drought and water shortages in recent years. Agriculture Minister Ahmed El Bouari recently launched the new agricultural season, aiming to assist farmers amid challenges such as rising costs and water scarcity.
The Ministry plans to plant 5 million hectares using approximately 1.26 million quintals of certified seeds, primarily for autumn cereals, offered at 3-5% lower prices than in previous years to promote widespread adoption.
