Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber, Ph.D., who serves as the director of the Division of Humanities and Criminology at UDC’s Community College, has been selected to participate in a prestigious two-week research seminar in Dakar, Senegal from January 3-21, 2024.
This program, known as the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar, is a competitive initiative administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) in partnership with the West African Research Center (WARC). Participants will have the opportunity to visit key sites such as Goree Island, Toubacouta, and Saint-Louis.
CAORC provides fully funded overseas seminars aimed at faculty and administrators from U.S. community colleges and minority-serving institutions. The goal is to enhance higher education by offering a global perspective that enriches students’ cultural understanding while honing critical thinking, communication, and leadership abilities. Each seminar typically includes 12 to 15 participants.
The theme of the seminar is “West Africa and the Diaspora: Continuities and Transformations.” It will encompass lectures, site visits, panel discussions, and film screenings focusing on Senegal’s history, culture, arts, economy, and political life, with particular attention to the relationship between West Africa and the diaspora.
Additionally, the seminar will emphasize Senegal’s spiritual diversity and religious tolerance, as well as the effects of growing transnational movements on society, particularly concerning youth.
Participants are expected to design and implement a project promoting internationalization on their campuses within a year following the seminar’s conclusion. After completion, they must submit a project report along with relevant curriculum or documentation to be featured on CAORC’s Open Educational Resources site.
Furthermore, each participant is required to contribute a brief article for the CAORC blog, Field Notes, to be submitted within three months of the program’s end.
Dr. Sandra Jowers-Barber’s selection for the CAORC-WARC 2024 Faculty Development Seminar underscores the inquiry-driven educational framework aimed at enriching U.S. academia’s cultural perspectives. Participants will gain significant insights into Senegal’s multifaceted heritage while developing projects to enhance internationalization on their campuses, thereby fostering a more globally aware student body.
