The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended a 17-member gang believed to have murdered a corps officer and engaged in attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta. The arrests were conducted by the Commandant-General’s Special Intelligence Squad in concert with other organizations, according to corps spokesman Afolabi Babawale. This gang had reportedly been under surveillance by both the NSCDC and the Tantita Security Service.
The gang previously assaulted a joint base of the NSCDC and Tantita Security Service, resulting in the death of an Assistant Superintendent and the theft of a speed boat and firearms. Preliminary investigations suggest that this group is also linked to an assault on the residence of the Petroleum Minister, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, on January 1. Ongoing investigations aim to bring the perpetrators to justice, with plans to arraign them in court soon.
During the apprehension, authorities recovered an AK47 rifle, empty cartridges, military uniforms, and combat boots from the suspects. Babawale praised NSCDC’s Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, for facilitating the operation through logistical support, highlighting his crucial role in combating illegal bunkering and other criminal activities in the region.
The NSCDC’s recent arrest of a 17-member gang highlights its commitment to combating crime in the Niger Delta. With significant evidence and ongoing investigations, the arrests may contribute to increased security in the region. The successful operation showcases effective collaboration between various agencies and emphasizes the importance of preventive measures against illegal activities.
